Gallow fisherman
Fishing gallows are a simplified version of the salmon „woog”, known since the Middle Ages. Unlike the salmon „woog”, the fishing gallows serve recreational fisheries. The first fishing gallows in Basel were erected in 1889 – at a time, when salmon were accumulating because of the power stations upstream and catches were very high. Nowadays, the small cabins are very sought-after collector’s items, a regular feature of the Rhine bank panorama of Basel.
